  5. And another year is almost over, so all I have to do is to wish you a merry
  6. christmas and a happy new year 1998. May everything turn out as you wanted
  7. it to be...

  9.  1.41   Changes/Additions since 1.40:
  10.     - Fixed bug in device scanner. Thanks to John Marchant for the
  11.       report.
  12.     - After some reports telling that the new prefs work on all systems,
  13.       I have removed the internal prefs from VirusZ and added support
  14.       code for the external ones. The VirusZ menu looks like before but
  15.       starts the new prefs now.
  16.       IMPORTANT: The prefs program MUST be copied to SYS:Prefs/ !!!
  17.     - Added viruses: French (old BB), Sinmut (old BB), Butonic 3.10 II,
  18.       Lisa FuckUp 3.0 and Zinko Trojan. Thanks to Jan Andersen for
  19.       sending them.
  20.     - New support BBS: XPoint. See Updates chapter in guides.
  21.     - Added ZIB linkvirus. Thanks to Jan again for this beast.
  22.     - Added ZIB Installer 1 + 2. Thanks to Jan once again for these ;-)

  24. While looking at this year's history, I noticed that I've only managed to
  25. release 6 updates:-( This is indeed very poor, but to my excuse I have to
  26. mention the 19(!) exams I've written this year, a full-time job 8 hours/day
  27. and a new girl-friend living about 100 km away which means we can see each
  28. other mostly only at the week-ends. Unfortunately this was the time in the
  29. past when I was very busy coding new stuff. This should nevertheless only
  30. be an explanation, don't get anything wrong about my relationship as I'm
  31. really happy.
  32.  
  33. Anyway, I got some complaints about the vector check (yes, it's still not
  34. finished) and several other things, but actually it gets a bit too much in
  35. the last months for me to handle. I'm thinking about an acceptable solution
  36. for the future as I really can understand all of you out there waiting for
  37. new releases with new features. So please be/stay patient...

  41.  1.40   Changes/Additions since 1.39:
  42.     - Fixed bug in startup code that must have been in there for a long
  43.       time. This one may have caused some of the problems in the past.
  44.     - Fixed recognition for Addy 0.99 Installer file and Glasnost boot.
  45.       Thanks to Jan Andersen, Dave Jones, Bert Jahn and the others for
  46.       the reports.
  47.     - Added recognition for ScareCrow trojan. Thanks to Jan Andersen.
  48.     - Fixed recognition for Bokor 1.05 and added Bokor 1.01, Bokor 1.06
  49.       and Bokor 1.1 linkviruses. Thanks to Dave Jones and Jan Andersen
  50.       for sending them.
  51.     - Added HitchHiker 4.23 and HNY Clone. Thanks to Jan again.
  52.     - Added Elbereth 1+2, Elbereth 3 + Installer, Elbereth 4, Disnomia

  54.     - Finally I have a little surprise for you: The totally new VirusZ
  55.       preferences program. It's still in beta-state, but only to let
  56.       you test the GUI on your machines. I did my very best to keep out
  57.       any illegal hacks from the size/position calculation code.
  58.       If anything interferes with my GUI on your Amiga, please let me
  59.       know or send me the responsible software/patch.
  60.       I NEED FEEDBACK before I add the new graphic routines to VirusZ
  61.       itself and remove the prefs from VirusZ. Until then, VirusZ will
  62.       look as it does now.

  66. After another 8 exams in July, I'm finally back home. This update is just to
  67. be up-to-date with the viruses, but I'm already working on something new for
  68. VirusZ. Be prepared!
  69.  
  70.  1.39   Changes/Additions since 1.38:
  71.     - Added new viruses: Bokor 1.05, IO4-Invi Trojan, VMK 3.00 Fake 2,
  72.       Xtruder 3.5 Trojan and BEOL 4 + Installer. Thanks to Jan Andersen
  73.       and others for sending them. Unfortunately I couldn't create a
  74.       working copy of BEOL 4, the file detection should be safe anyway,
  75.       but there's no memory removal code at the moment.

  77. As I get reports from time to time: There seems to be some bug in the file
  78. check, but it never appears on my machine. Directly after selecting the
  79. files to be checked, VirusZ freezes. I've looked through my sourcecode again
  80. and again, but I really don't find a bug. Sorry to Julie Hall and all the
  81. others, but I'm currently not able to find the reason for your problems.
  82. I'll keep on searching...

  84. Another problem is the support for ZIP archives. Charlene McNulty wrote to
  85. me that VirusZ doesn't extract zip archives, and all I can say is: yes, you
  86. are right! I've tried all different settings including the one that works
  87. perfectly from Shell (Unzip -qqo %F -d %p), but when started from VirusZ,
  88. Unzip doesn't work. I'll try to check this out until the next release.

  111.     - Added additional filter mechanism to the device detection code
  112.       to avoid problems with CD-ROM drives. These should not appear

  114.       report about his drive.
  115.     - Rewritten file check code to check data files for viruses too.
  116.       There appeared a macro virus called 'SexGuide' which I've added.

  120. Actually,  version  1.36 should become the XMAS '96 release, but as I had so
  121. many  other  things  to do, this is the first version in 1997.  Another year
  122. has  gone  by  and  I'd  like to thank all folks out there that supported me
  123. through  the  last year(s) with new stuff and money.  At this place I'd also
  124. like  to  thank  Jan  Andersen  and  his  family  for sending that nice Xmas
  125. postcard.   I wish all of you out there the very best for this new year 1997
  126. and  I wish all you virus-coders out there the worst nightmares ever dreamed
  127. by any human being!!

  129.  1.36   Changes/Additions since 1.35:
  130.     - Added new viruses: HD Protect 6.24, COP 15, Trust No-One 1-3.
  131.       Thanks to Jan Hendrik Lots for sending those beasts.
  132.     - Finally implemented the bootblock brain!!! After 3 years of
  133.       laziness in this point I managed to code all the necessary stuff
  134.       to get the brain working. Now VirusZ can learn all your custom
  135.       bootblocks and will no longer report them as unknown.
  136.       See details in the guide at the 'Misc Prefs' chapter and in the
  137.       'Bootblock Lab' section. All formerly disabled buttons are now
  138.       fully working.
  139.     - New distribution site: 'The Realm' is dead, from now on call the
  140.       'Army Shop'. Don't panic, same number, same sysop ;-)
  141.     - Added sort mechanism to brain editor and fixed problems with
  142.       delete function.
  143.     - Added new device detection code that finds all usable devices
  144.       itself and therefore removed 'Devices' from 'Misc Prefs'. Now all
  145.       mounted sector-based drives will be scanned automatically.
  146.       I've tested this routine with SCSI/IDE HDs, SyQuest and CD-ROM
  147.       and it worked fine. Please let me know if it doesn't work properly
  148.       on your system.
  149.     - Added menu item 'Update Devices' to refresh the device list after
  150.       mounting some new drives (eg. SyQuest, CD-ROM etc.).
  151.     - Added two new options to the Background prefs: 'Check All Drives
  152.       On Update' and 'Report Known Bootblocks'. The first option makes
  153.       VirusZ rescan all disks after 'Update Devices', the second option
  154.       enables the report of bootblocks included in the brain by the
  155.       background check.
  156.     - Added possibility to go to Vector Check and Boot Lab directly from
  157.       the background checker if something unusual has been detected.
  158.       This feature was already implemented a few years ago but has been
  159.       removed after rewriting the background code. So now I hope that
  160.       all you folks demanding it from time to time are happy again ;-)
  161.       Note that this only works if VirusZ isn't active in any other way
  162.       at that moment (e.g. File Check).

  164.  1.35   Changes/Additions since 1.34:
  165.     - Added new topic to vector check: 'Suspicious Process Fields'.
  166.       The tc_Switch, tc_Launch and pr_PktWait fields of every process
  167.       are listed here. These fields are used by some new viruses and
  168.       they are likely to be used by future viruses too.
  169.     - Added 'Show Process Fields' to vector check prefs. This button
  170.       switches the function mentioned above.
  171.     - Added 'Process Fields' to 'Clear' menu in the vector check to
  172.       reset the above mentioned pointers.
  173.     - Added process field check to the background checker.
  174.     - Added 'Process Fields' buttons to the background prefs. Here you
  175.       can turn on/off startup check/surveillance of the process fields.
  176.     - Added new viruses: TRSI-ZNT.exe Fake, Firedom 1.4, HNY Clones.

  185.     The time has come to go back to the 'Fachhochschule' again, now for
  186.     about nine months until July 1997. This means that I will only work
  187.     on VirusZ at the week-ends which is far too less for astonishing
  188.     improvements. Therefore I will mainly do some new-virus-implemented
  189.     updates. Nevertheless VirusZ development will be continued...

  192.  1.34   Changes/Additions since 1.33:
  193.     - Added new viruses: ADO! + Installer + Library, Gotcha! II, ORB 95,
  194.       VoxelSvind Trojan and AGA Italy Fake. Thanks to Jan Andersen and
  195.       Jan Hendrik Lots for sending those beasts.
  196.     - Added BEOL 96 virus, the most clever bastard ever seen on Amiga
  197.       so far. It took a lot of analysing work to find a cure against
  198.       this sucker. Thanks to Jan Hendrik Lots for sending it and Markus
  199.       Schmall for some more example files.
  200.     - Added B.E.O.L. 2 and Affe linkviruses. Thanks to Markus Schmall
  201.       for sending them.
  202.     - Added XCom linkvirus. Thanks to Markus Lück for sending it.

  205.     Jan Andersen reported that the archive check crashes on his A500.
  206.     I myself then tested VirusZ on a plain 68000 and on Kickstart 2.0,
  207.     but it worked well. If someone has similar problems on his machine,
  208.     please tell me and send me the archive that crashed for testing...

  211.  1.33   Changes/Additions since 1.32:
  212.     - Added archivers preferences! Here you can easily enter the names,
  213.       recognition offsets/data and command lines of any file based
  214.       archiver programs (eg. LhA, LZX) you want VirusZ to recognize and
  215.       extract.
  216.     - If preferences have been changed during a session, VirusZ now
  217.       tells you if any of them have not been saved yet before exiting.
  218.       This is especially useful as the new archivers preferences might
  219.       be a lot of typing stuff which is annoying to lose.
  220.     - Added 'EF67A3C3' linkvirus (temporary name until something better
  221.       comes to my mind). Thanks to Christoph Faßbach for sending me this
  222.       little beast.
  223.     - Fixed wrong recognition for Lisa FuckUp 2.0. Sorry folks, but all
  224.       those RexxMasher compiled files have been recognized as a virus.
  225.       Thanks to Bert Jahn for sending the RmS package and the report.
  226.       And sorry to Matthias Scheler (AmiNet Administration) for all the
  227.       trouble.
  228.     - Added 'Extract Archives' toggle to the file check preferences to
  229.       switch on/off the new feature.
  230.     - Finally added recognition/extract code to the file check itself.
  231.       The rewritten file loader now also handles data files much better
  232.       if 'Decrunch Data Files' is activated. Only crunched data files
  233.       will be read completely, all others will just be read partially
  234.       for recognition purposes.
  235.     - Added more informative statistics at the end of each file check.
  236.     - Added new options to CHECKFILE and CHECKDIR ARexx commands:
  237.       a. USEEXTERN enables use of external xfd slaves.
  238.       b. EXTRACT turns on extracting of archives.
  239.     - Added USEEXTERN and EXTRACT options to Shell template. Meanings
  240.       are the same as with the ARexx commands.
  241.     - Added HitchHiker 3.00 + Installer. This is the 50th linkvirus
  242.       recognized by VirusZ!!! Special thanks to Markus Schmall for
  243.       sending this 'anniversary gift'.
  244.     - Fixed bug in HitchHiker 2.01 repair code. Some branches haven't
  245.       been removed properly in the last version. Thanks to Emmanuel
  246.       Poirier for this report.
  247.     - Added new version of xfdmaster.library.

  250.     The new features of this version have been heavily debugged and
  251.     I already fixed 3 major bugs in the beta versions, so this final
  252.     release should be stable and work properly. If there nevertheless

  267.  1.31   Changes/Additions since 1.30:
  268.     - Enhanced basic file check routines. Added better test routines
  269.       for truncated files, added support for reloc32_short hunks in the
  270.       linkvirus removal code, added better CPU cache controlling code.
  271.       I hope that every abnormal condition is under control now ;-)
  272.     - Added analyzer for raw bootblock data files to file check. Now
  273.       you can scan your bootblock directories and get a report of all
  274.       bootblock viruses.
  275.     - Fixed severe problems in the file check: If a file was infected
  276.       with a linkvirus and underneath there was a 4eb9-linked file,
  277.       the 'Delete file' requester didn't pop up. The same problem
  278.       appeared when a linkvirus couldn't be removed properly.
  279.     - Fixed some bootblock recognitions. It sometimes happened that
  280.       clones were reported with the wrong name.
  281.  
  282.     All the above improvements are mainly based on the test results of
  283.     the Virus Test Center of the University of Hamburg. Thanks to Sönke

  287.     - Fixed repair code for Invader linkvirus. Some files might have
  288.       been defect after repair with the old code.
  289.     - Added new viruses: AMOS AGA-Install, CompuPhagozyte 10/11/12,
  290.       Circle of Power 12/13/14, VirusConstructionSet 2, LZX Reg Fake,
  291.       Creator, Degrad, Andy/Decade, Susi Drive Stepper, Biomechanic 7,
  292.       Wireface 3/4, Fileghost 1, Strange Atmosphere + 3 Installers.
  293.       Thanks to Markus Schmall and Jan Andersen for reacting so quickly
  294.       on the poor results in the VTC test and providing me with those
  295.       missing viruses.
  296.     - Added new feature to file check: It now automatically removes any
  297.       hunk_name ($3e8) found in a file. This is especially useful as
  298.       there appeared several disguised trojans through the last months
  299.       that used hunk_name to avoid proper file checks. I changed some
  300.       recognitions too: Wireface Trojans, COP 8 and UA Dialer 6.2 will
  301.       be analyzed completely and reported with their real names now.
  302.     - Added Amixhack trojan. Thanks to Dave Jones for that bastard.
  303.     - Added viruses: UnLZX Trojan, PowerTrader Fake, The BBS Traveller,
  304.       Hitch-Hiker 1.10 and Mutation Nation 1.0. Thanks again to Markus

  306.     - Fixed Enforcer hit in the B.E.O.L. memory check code. Thanks to
  307.       Christoph Dietz for the report.

  314.     And finally sorry for this relatively long delay, but it's going
  315.     to be summer and I need some fresh air from time to time ;-)

  317.  1.30   Changes/Additions since 1.29:
  318.     - Added some old bootblock viruses: Ass Protector French, Cracker
  319.       Exterminator, Disk Furunkel, Lamer Ext. Decoded, Laureline Female,
  320.       Sinister Syndicate 1+2. Some of these aren't really viruses, but
  321.       most other virus checkers detect them, so I added them too.
  322.       Thanks to Jan Andersen for sending that stuff.
  323.     - Fixed bug in preferences load routine. This code crashed on plain
  324.       68000 machines because of odd stack addresses. Thanks again to
  325.       Jan and to Phillip Feigh for the report.
  326.     - Fixed bug in the 'Happy New Year 96' repair code. The old routine
  327.       missed to check for one possible branch location and therefore
  328.       produced some crashing files from time to time. Thanks to Holger
  329.       Wessling and Jan-Tore Eliassen for reporting that bug and sorry
  330.       for all the trouble you had with the defect files.
  331.     - Added patches: CacheIt, ModePro, NewIcons, Prop3D and UrouHack.
  332.       Thanks to Dave Jones for collecting and sending that stuff.
  333.     - Added new version of xfdmaster.library.
  334.     - Added decrunch support to the FD file loader in the vector check.
  335.       Now you can crunch your FD files with any data cruncher supported
  336.       by xfdmaster.library. Thanks to Dave Jones for the nice idea.
  337.     - VirusZ now requires xfdmaster.library already at startup, ie. you
  338.       MUST install it in your LIBS: drawer. The reason is simple: Until
  339.       v1.29, I added several xfd-routines directly to VirusZ to avoid
  340.       loading xfdmaster.library, but this seems to be very uneffective
  341.       as most people use the decrunch feature anyway. There is a nice
  342.       side effect too: VirusZ has been shortened by about 2500 bytes.
  343.     - Added patches: LowFrag and UrouHack 1.3. Thanks to Bert Jahn for
  344.       sending that stuff.
  345.     - Saved about 1600 bytes by removing double strings (mostly virus
  346.       names) and optimized some memory recognition code.
  347.  
  348.  1.29   Changes/Additions since 1.28:
  349.     - Added xfdPatch to the vector check.
  350.     - Added recognition for LZX archives to the file check. Thanks to
  351.       Holger Wessling for the hint.
  352.     - Added MCP and PatchControl 2.2 to the vector check. Thanks to
  353.       Stefan Sommerfeld for sending the latest versions and for the
  354.       extra information.
  355.     - Added option 'Use External Slaves' to the file check preferences.
  356.       This is a new feature of xfdmaster.library v37 to filter out
  357.       external slaves that cause trouble all the time.
  358.     - Added KUK Crew and LZX 1.2 Fake trojans and Invader linkvirus.
  359.       Thanks to Markus Schmall for sending them.
  360.     - Modified and expanded the background preferences. The buttons for
  361.       'Bootblocks', 'Disk-Validators' and 'Known Viruses' exist twice
  362.       now as all the other buttons too. The 'Check Disks On Startup'
  363.       has been removed and replaced by the above mentioned. Now you can
  364.       switch on/off the bootblock and disk-validator check separately,
  365.       the check for known viruses can be switched off at startup too.
  366.       Please control your settings when you start the new version for
  367.       the first time.
  368.     - Rearranged some vector check code for better performance and
  369.       finally added all patches caused by SetPatch 40.16. Thanks to
  370.       Lars Kristensen for reporting about the SetPatch problems on
  371.       his machine.
  372.     - Redesigned file check preferences for better readability.
  373.     - Added changes done by 68040.library to vector check. If there
  374.       are still some vectors reported, please send me a note because
  375.       I couldn't test the recognition myself. No 68040 :-(

  377.  1.28   Changes/Additions since 1.27:
  378.     - Finally fixed a problem that I already noticed some months ago,
  379.       but didn't find the bug. After inserting and removing some disks,
  380.       it may have happened that the system had a busy-loop whenever the
  381.       background checker was working. Now I found the problem that
  382.       caused all the trouble: the BEOL memory checker tried to read
  383.       from a non-existing process in not available memory areas.
  384.     - Added a big new feature: a real background checker that not only
  385.       searches for known viruses but recognizes all changes done to
  386.       any system vectors. You can configure it totally to your needs.
  387.       All checks can be enabled/disabled separately for startup and
  388.       for surveillance.
  389.     - Added new security check to the memory checker: before testing
  390.       for known viruses, the respective address is tested to be in
  391.       available memory areas. This prevents busy-loops with RAD: or
  392.       other residents located near the bounds of a memory area.
  393.     - Added MagicCX 2.39 to the vector check. Thanks to Martin Hans
  394.       for sending it.

  396.  1.27   Changes/Additions since 1.26:
  397.     - Added Happy New Year 96 linkvirus + 2 installers and three old

  532.       I've overseen the fact that the encryption may have two
  533.       different branch offsets. Sorry folks, now it's 100% safe!
  534.     - Optimized hunk handling in the linkvirus removal routines
  535.       and saved about 400 bytes of code.
  536.     - Finally fixed one BIG problem of the file checker:
  537.       Whenever there was a write access (deleting/removing virus),
  538.       it may have happened that some files were overseen or
  539.       checked twice because the filesystem exchanges some file
  540.       headers on disk on every write access. This was especially
  541.       nasty concerning RAM:, because that handler is not block
  542.       oriented. That problems are history!!
  543.       I've rewritten the whole directory scan routine using ExAll()
  544.       instead of Examine()/ExNext(). Now not only the above mentioned
  545.       problems are fixed, but the code is even shorter and faster
  546.       than before. Nested directories are now handled via recursive
  547.       calls to the scan routine!

  851.       problem of VirusZ at all, but a bug in the mfm.device of
  852.       Commodore. This device trashes register D3 in the Open() call
  853.       and therefore caused VirusZ to crash because it uses D3.
  854.       Time for a little bug fix, Commodore??

  856.       know if I would have found that bug as fast as he did.
